Medical Rep to Doctorate in Human Resources and Board of Directors

MVS Murthy

I began my career as a Medical Rep with Lupin immediately after my graduation in my hometown Visakhapatnam. Soon, the MNC bug bit me and I had opportunity to join the erstwhile Ciba-Geigy, which eventually became today’s Novartis. After spending a good amount time at Ciba-Geigy, my desire to try something new and get out of the comfort zone drew me to an opportunity with National Dairy Development Board (IIL – An Animal Health Company) and relocated to Delhi. I was responsible for sales in the Northern Region, in addition to administrative work with DCGI & Ministry of External Affairs (for exports). I regard this as the best period of learning and exposure.

However, my desire to get back to human healthcare drew me to an opportunity with Pharmacia as a First Line Manager. Two years later, Pfizer took over Pharmacia and during the transition period I was offered the role of Field Training Manager, apart from the First Line Manager’s role. I consulted my peers and seniors and decided to give it a try. Only to realize that I was indeed passionate about Training & Development. I did not have to look back thereafter. Later, I moved to Dr. Reddy’s as Training Manager and I was instrumental in several new initiatives in Training & Development.

That was the time I seriously contemplated to make a career shift into Human Resources and the Future Group opportunity was just there for the asking. nFDIL was a group company with a mandate for captive IT/ITES services for Future Group. The development center was setup at Ahmedabad, and I am proud to say that I was instrumental in getting the infrastructure and support services in place to start the operations without delay. I had the opportunity to kickstart HR delivery engagement and started scaling newer heights. Ramping up teams and skill development apart from HR Operations kept me busy.

I dedicate my success to my managers throughout the journey and my supportive family. In pursuit of achieving career growth I kept up my passion for academics, and successfully complete post-graduation in HR from Symbiosis and doctorate in HR from Pacific University.

Apart from serving on the nFDIL board as an independent Director, I also held honorary positions as Advisory to the Board of Studies with Nirma University, Gitam University and Gujarat Technological University. I also had industry and academic interactions at XLRI Jamshedpur, IIM Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad Management Association, Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), FICCI, ETCIO Speak, Cornerstone Events and People Matters.
