The Great Healthcare Dilemma: Who Will Own the Next Indian Hospital?

The next owner of an Indian hospital may not be the doctor whose name is on the board.

Institutional capital is rapidly reshaping hospital ownership in India. A 2026 study mapping 70 private-equity-backed healthcare acquisitions between 2007 and May 2025 found that nearly two-thirds involved hospitals, with investment concentrated largely in more urbanized states. Yet the impact on healthcare delivery, pricing, and clinical outcomes in India remains largely unmeasured.

The returns attracting capital are significant—but need to be read carefully. Selected transactions have reported exit multiples ranging from roughly 2.5x to 10x, although these are examples, not an industry-wide return benchmark.
