Indian Pharma Is Two Industries Wearing One Label

Indian pharma is often discussed as one sector. In reality, the economics, operating models, and measures of success are very different depending on which part of the industry you are looking at.

One side is India’s ₹2.46 lakh crore domestic branded-generics market, where doctors influence brand choice, patients purchase, and trust built over years can create durable franchises.

The other is a US$31.1 billion export engine, where buyers have greater power, prices erode, regulatory execution matters enormously, and profits can rise or fall sharply depending on product complexity and competition. Around these two businesses, a third opportunity is expanding through CDMO, biologics, and specialty medicines.
